Standing seam vs. exposed fastener
Standing seam hides its fasteners under the seam, so nothing penetrates the weather surface and the panels are free to expand and contract with temperature. It is the premium residential choice and what we recommend for homes.
Exposed-fastener panel screws through the face into the substrate. It costs less and it is a sound choice for garages, pole buildings and outbuildings, but the gaskets under those screws are a maintenance item over the life of the roof.
The details that decide whether metal works here
Metal does not forgive sloppy eave work. We run ice-and-water membrane generously at the eaves and valleys underneath, because meltwater under a snow slab still has to be stopped by the underlayment.
Panels move. Clips, fastener choice and panel length all have to allow for thermal cycling, or the roof telegraphs oil canning and works its fasteners loose over the years.
Snow retention matters where a slab of snow would come off over a doorway, a deck, a walkway or a parked vehicle. We plan retention placement as part of the design instead of adding it after somebody gets buried.
Metal or asphalt for your roof?
Metal costs more up front and generally lasts longer with less maintenance. Asphalt costs less, installs faster, is simpler to repair, and on a complex roofline with many valleys and penetrations it is often the more sensible choice.

How long does a metal roof last?
Considerably longer than asphalt when it is installed correctly and the panels are allowed to move. Manufacturer finish warranties and system life vary by profile and gauge, and we go through the actual figures for the system you are considering rather than quoting a round number.
Is a metal roof loud in the rain?
Not over a solid deck with underlayment and an insulated attic beneath it. The noise complaints come from panel installed over open purlins on an uninsulated building.
Can metal go over my existing shingles?
We tear off. Installing over old shingles hides deck condition and complicates the underlayment detail that keeps meltwater out at the eaves.
Does metal help with ice dams?
It sheds snow better, which helps, but ice dams are ultimately caused by heat escaping into the attic. We correct insulation-driven ventilation problems as part of the job — the panel alone is not the fix.
