Freeze-thaw cycling and ice dams
Northern Wisconsin roofs freeze and thaw dozens of times a season. Meltwater running under snow refreezes at the cold eave and backs up under shingles. The fix is rarely the shingle — it is ice-and-water membrane carried well past the warm wall line, sealed penetrations, and an attic cold enough that snow melts from the sun instead of the ceiling.
Snow load and where snow goes
Snow sits for months here. On metal, it eventually releases all at once, so panel layout and snow retention above doors, decks, walkways, propane tanks and mechanicals get planned before install. On shingles the load lingers longer, which puts more weight on framing and more water at valleys.

Eaves, valleys, sidewalls, chimneys and every penetration get membrane. Synthetic underlayment covers the remaining field. On low-slope porch tie-ins the membrane coverage goes further, because those are the roofs that fail first up here.
Wind and lake exposure
An open shoreline gives wind a clean run at the roof. Starter courses, nailing patterns, ridge caps and edge metal are where wind damage begins, so those details are not the place to save money on a lake lot.
Pine debris and heavy shade
Needles pack into valleys and behind chimneys, hold moisture and slow drainage. Open valley details and clean flashing transitions matter more under pine cover than on an open subdivision roof.
Roof decking, flashing and valleys
Tear-off is the only honest way to see decking. Soft or delaminated sheathing is replaced and photographed. Step and counter flashing at walls and chimneys is rebuilt rather than caulked, because caulk is a two-year answer to a twenty-year problem.

Steep cabin roofs change staging, safety and cost. Seasonal owners are often hours away, so the project runs on photographs, written scope and a phone call before anything significant changes.
