Understand the Moisture Cycle First
A cabin heated hard for a weekend and then left cold drives moisture into the roof assembly in pulses. Wood stoves, propane heaters and quick warm-ups all put water vapor into the air, and it condenses on the first cold surface it finds — often the underside of the sheathing.
That is why a cabin reroof should always include an honest look at intake, exhaust and air sealing. New shingles over a wet assembly is money spent on the wrong layer.
Materials, Ranked for Cabin Duty
- Standing-seam metal: sheds snow, no exposed fasteners, decades of unattended service — the default recommendation where budget allows
- Exposed-fastener metal panel: economical and legitimate on simple cabin and outbuilding roofs; gasketed fasteners are the wear item
- Architectural asphalt, algae-resistant: sound and much cheaper upfront; needs proper ventilation and generous eave membrane to reach its life here

- Open metal valleys where pine and hardwood cover is heavy
