Freeze-Thaw Is the Main Engine
A shingle roof sheds water going downhill. Freeze-thaw cycling breaks that assumption. Meltwater refreezes at a cold eave, backs up behind the ice, and then sits on a surface designed only to shed. That water finds nail penetrations, shingle laps and flashing joints that would never leak under rain.
This is why ice-and-water membrane coverage past the warm wall is the single most valuable line item on a Northwoods estimate, and why a code-minimum strip at the eave is frequently not enough on a shallow-pitch or heavily insulated roof.
The Attic Causes More Roof Failures Than the Weather Does
Warm air escaping into the attic melts snow from underneath. The melt runs to the cold overhang and freezes there. Do that a few hundred times and you have an ice dam, a stained ceiling and shingles aging from below. The fix is almost never a better shingle — it is air sealing, insulation and balanced intake-and-exhaust ventilation.
- Intake at the soffit must roughly match exhaust at the ridge
- Bath, kitchen and dryer vents must terminate outside, never in the attic
- Recessed lights and attic hatches are common warm-air leaks
- Added insulation without added ventilation frequently makes ice damming worse
Snow Load, Sliding Snow and Where It Lands
Long-duration snow load keeps a roof wet for months, stresses shallow pitches and loads valleys where two planes dump into one. Metal roofs solve much of this by shedding before a pack can build — but that snow has to go somewhere. Planning retention over doors, decks, walkways and propane tanks is part of designing a metal roof here, not an accessory.
Trees, Shade and Rural Lots
Much of the housing around Tomahawk, Minocqua, Rhinelander and Merrill sits under pine and hardwood. Shaded north slopes stay damp and grow moss and algae. Needles pack into valleys and behind chimneys and hold water against the roof. Overhanging limbs abrade shingle surfaces in wind. And on a seasonal property, all of it happens for months with nobody there to notice.
If your place sits empty part of the year
The failure you should worry about is not the dramatic one. It is a small leak that runs from January to May. A yearly look at valleys, flashings and pipe boots is cheap insurance on a seasonal home.
What This Means When You Hire
A contractor who works this climate every year prices ice-and-water coverage generously, looks in the attic before quoting, expects to find soft decking on shaded slopes, and talks about ventilation before talking about shingle color. One who works mostly in a milder market may quote a technically compliant roof that is simply not built for what happens here in February.
